Recovering Digital Photos There will always be importance about photographs. We take photos to remind us of cherished memories, as we look through old albums and remember how things used to be. A great deal of the time photos we take are once-in-a-lifetime opportunist shots, candid camera efforts that can induce happiness, embarrassment, pride - all manner of emotions as we look at them and recollect those times. But, there's nothing worse than losing them. A malfunctioning camera may be of little use to anyone, but digital photos may still be recoverable if the smart card is intact. Most digital cameras come with a small amount of built-in memory and the ability to use removable cards. Although the initial purchase of a card may be slightly expensive, it is always prudent to buy one that is compatible with your camera and save your shots to it. That way, if anything happens to your camera, you can still transfer your photos from the card to your computer and then back them up onto a CD or DVD. A portable card-reader will be needed for this and works independently of the camera. Simply slot your card into the reader and then attach it to your computer via a USB slot. Occasionally, you might accidentally move your photos to the Recycle Bin on your computer. Don't be too alarmed if you have done this, as your photos are still recoverable. Simply right-click with your mouse on the Recycle Bin logo on your desktop and choose 'open' from the dropdown menu. If your photos are there, right mouse click on each of them and select 'restore'. The photos will return to their original location on your hard drive. Supposing, though, that the card in your camera becomes corrupted, or the camera itself developes a fault? This doesn't make for easy recovery of your pictures, so it may be that you'll have to call in the professionals. There is also software available that can cover camera or card malfunction and will usually recover your photos. The software can usually recover most files on your camera or card. This ranges from jpg pictures to video files. Pictures that have been transferred to a computer before it crashes can be recovered by data recovery methods, which are outside the scope of this article. You may find that calling in an expert in the case of a camera breakdown could save you time, money and heartache, but you'll have to act quickly. Your digital photos are precious to you and everyone captured within them. Accidents do happen, though, so don't be afraid to use the appropriate software (just type 'photo recovery software' into your favourite search engine) or call in the experts. |
